Te Hau Ranga Ora Māori Health Service is available to all patients and whānau during the day, on call after hours and in the weekend.
For patients and whānau
Haumoana navigators:
- are part of the Whanganui Hospital team
- support patients and whānau during their stay in hospital
- assist whānau-centred care by working alongside staff to support and engage with whānau
- advocate for patients and their whānau
- whare accommodation for whānau unable to find accommodation at short notice
- facilitate links back to services in the community.
Te Hau Ranga Ora Māori Health Service
For hospital staff
Te Hau Ranga Ora provides:
- Māori cultural guidance and support from kaumatua and kuia
- haumoana and kaitakitaki (nurse manager) walking alongside staff colleagues to assist and guide them when caring for Māori whanau
- implementation of polices and guidelines that embrace tikanga Māori
- Māori cultural education and support to DHB staff
- Māori workforce development
- planning and contracting community based kaupapa Māori services
- strategic and executive leadership, monitoring achievement to Māori health indicators of Health NZ — Whanganui performance, working with health providers and other sectors
- governance partnership between DHB Board and Hauora A Iwi, Iwi Relationship Board.
