Dental (Oral) Health Services

Bay of Plenty DHB has preschool, school, adolescent and hospital dental services.  Dental health is an important part of general health for the whole family from infants to the older adult.

A range of free dental services for children and adolescents (up to 18 years age) along with a limited range of publicly funded services for adults is available in the Bay of Plenty region.

For accidents causing facial and dental injuries, please contact the Emergency Department at Tauranga or Whakatane Hospitals or any local dentist.


Community Dental

Community dental services for children and adolescents are now provided from 6 new fixed dental clinics - Otumoetai Primary School, Greerton Village School, Tauranga Intermediate, Arataki School, Te Puke Intermediate and Whakatane Intermediate. These clinics are supported across the region by 11 mobile dental units. 

Our office is open 8.00am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday and we are based at 889 Cameron Rd, Tauranga

What We Offer:

  • Enrolment from birth
  • A family/whanau approach, where parents/caregivers are encouraged to attend appointments
  • Oral health check-ups and examinations
  • Preventative care e.g. oral health advice, fissure sealants, fluoride applications
  • Dental Treatment e.g. fillings, extractions
  • Referral to other services such as local dentists and hospital dental services.


Free of Charge Dental Care for PreSchool Children

In the Bay of Plenty region, family and whanau are encouraged to enrol their preschool aged children from birth for free regular dental checks and dental treatment.

Free of Charge Dental Care for Children

Free regular basic dental care is provided for children aged 5 years to year 8 by the Community Dental Service.

Special Dental Services for Children and Adolescents


Free of Charge Dental Care for Youth
(Year 9 - 18th birthday)

Youth are entitled to free check-ups and regular basic dental care from year 9 until their 18th birthday.

  • Contact your own family dentist
  • If you are not registered with a dentist then contact a dentist from the list of providers of Special Dental Services for Children and Adolescents

Emergency Dental Care for Low Income Adults

Subsidised emergency dental care is provided by dentists who are contracted with the Bay of Plenty DHB

The services are available to those who:

  • Are over 18 years of age
  • Hold a valid Community Service card
  • Apply for assistance from WINZ
