National Volunteers Week 2018

Face of the Day - Day 4

Cheryl moved here in October 2015 after working at Middlemore Hospital for 13 years as a ward clerk in the Adult Acute Surgical ward. She joined walking groups to meet people as she knew no one when she came. One of her reasons to volunteer was that she wants to help people feel safe, cared for, and listened to, and also to help the staff. Nearing retirement age she wasn't prepared to sit down and do nothing for the rest of her life.

So began her trip back into the environment she had recently left in Auckland. Cheryl is based in the Cancer Centre as part of its team of volunteers doing administration. It is mostly filing, updating demographics, pulling files ready for patient's appointments, and making up new patient files. Her goal is to help the staff by doing the mundane, niggly tasks that are so arduous and frees them up to spend more time with their patients.

Cheryl knows she is appreciated by the enthusiastic staff greetings when she arrives and being treated as part of the team. It makes her feel pretty good and she loves her volunteer work. Since joining the volunteer team she has blossomed and expanded her horizons by reaching out and becoming a very busy member of the community with a full life.
