Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal a windfall for sick Bay children

Unwell children at Tauranga Hospital are set to benefit from to a generous donation thanks to the community and staff supporting the 2018 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal.

The hospital was presented with a cheque for $59,000 at the Papamoa Countdown store yesterday. The annual appeal raised a total of $1.2 million for 21 children's hospitals and wards across New Zealand.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the hospital, BOPDHB acting Chief Operating Officer Bronwyn Anstis said, "It's a very generous donation, beyond what we could have imagined," and she thanked staff and the wider community for its fundraising efforts.

"We're very grateful especially for our sick children. It can be pretty tough for children to be unwell, not only for them but also their whānau.

"This generous donation means we can go ahead with plans and equipment specifically aimed at improving the quality of care we provide for children in hospital and in the community.

"A new therapeutic outdoor space will be purpose built in the New Year specifically for children we see who are working on improving their mental wellbeing," said Bronwyn Anstis.

Research shows spending time in nature decreases feelings of depression and anxiety, improves concentration, buffers against stress, makes lives meaningful, speeds recovery from tough times.

She said proceeds from this year's Hospital Appeal also allows Tauranga Hospital's Children's Ward, to have a  portable monitor allowing very sick children to be continuously monitored as they are transferred to other wards or other hospitals.

On top that, a mobile vision and hearing kit will be purchased allowing children to have these important tests at a more convenient time and closer to home.

The Kids Hospital Appeal has raised a total of $12.8 million since it was launched in 2007. It allows hospitals to purchase the 'nice-to-haves' over and above what could be afforded within budget constraints.

Whakatāne Hospital received $35,000 from the appeal and plans to build a children's play space specifically for sick children in the Children's Ward.
