Influenza cases close Tauranga Hospital ward to new admissions as precaution

Please quote BOPDHB Infectious Diseases Specialist Dr Diane Hanfelt-Goade

Seven patients on Ward 2A (Kaupapa Ward) have been diagnosed with influenza since Saturday and the ward has been closed to new admissions as a precautionary measure. The hospital's other usual infection control measures have put in place for incidents of this type.

Visitors, especially those who have not been immunized, are advised to avoid Ward 2A. Anyone who has flu-like symptoms (sore throat, fever or chills) should not go to work or school, or visit patients in hospital, due to the risk of infecting others.

Our advice to the public is to be very vigilant about hand hygiene, including regular hand washing with soap and water or alcohol gel. If you are feeling unwell you should contact your GP.
