for more bird flu information

An influenza pandemic could happen at any time. The most important thing is for New Zealanders to be prepared. This website contains up to date information, contact information, the pandemic plan and planning tips for you, your family or business.

Fourteen countries have, or are experiencing outbreaks of Avian Influenza (bird flu) affecting mainly poultry. As of 11 January 2008, there have been 349 confirmed cases of bird flu in humans, with 216 deaths reported to the World Health Organisation since December 2003.

Talk to your friends about health hygiene- hand washing, safe coughing and sneezing.

The World Health Organization is worried that an avian influenza virus and a human influenza virus might mix, or the avian flu virus could change in another way, resulting in a new strain of influenza virus that can be easily passed from person to person.

The Bay of Plenty and Lakes District Health Boards are working together to plan for a potential pandemic.
